Indian Cricket Mourns the Loss of Anshuman Gaekwad

New Delhi: Indian cricket has suffered a significant loss with the passing of former cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad. Gaekwad, who had been battling blood cancer, succumbed to the illness while undergoing treatment in London. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had extended financial support to his family, sanctioning Rs 1 crore for his treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, praising Gaekwad’s contributions to cricket. “Anshuman Gaekwad will be remembered for his contribution to cricket. He was a talented player and an outstanding coach. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and fans. Peace,” tweeted the Prime Minister.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah also conveyed his sorrow, stating, “My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Anshuman Gaekwad. Heartbreaking for the entire cricketing fraternity. May his soul rest in peace.”

Gaekwad’s illness and the subsequent appeal for support saw prominent cricket figures, including Kapil Dev, reaching out to the BCCI for assistance. In response, Jay Shah promptly facilitated a financial aid package to assist Gaekwad’s family during this challenging time.

Anshuman Gaekwad was a revered figure in Indian cricket, both as a player and a coach. He made his Test debut in 1974 and represented India in 40 Test matches until 1984. Gaekwad scored 1,985 runs at an average of 29.63, including two centuries and ten half-centuries. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he played 15 matches, amassing 269 runs with one fifty to his name.

Beyond his playing career, Gaekwad made notable contributions as the coach of the Indian cricket team on two occasions. His strategic acumen and dedication to the game earned him respect from players and fans alike.
