New Delhi: In a landmark moment for India’s technological ambitions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with the country’s first indigenously manufactured semiconductor chip, marking the formal beginning of India’s chip-making era.
The symbolic handover took place during a high-level event showcasing the nation’s progress in electronics manufacturing and digital infrastructure.
The chip, developed under the government’s ambitious “India Semiconductor Mission,” represents a significant leap towards self-reliance in the semiconductor sector — a domain long dominated by global giants. With this milestone, India joins a select group of nations capable of designing and fabricating advanced microchips, a critical component in everything from smartphones to satellites.
PM Modi hailed the achievement as a “historic breakthrough” and emphasised its strategic importance for national security, economic growth and technological sovereignty. “This chip is not just a piece of silicon — it is a symbol of India’s resolve to lead in the digital age,” he said.
The chip was manufactured at a state-of-the-art facility established through public-private collaboration, with support from global technology partners and domestic innovators. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India), aiming to reduce dependency on foreign imports and strengthen domestic capabilities.
Industry experts believe that India’s entry into chip manufacturing will open new avenues for investment, job creation and innovation. It also positions the country as a potential alternative hub amid global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions.
As India steps into the semiconductor spotlight, the focus now shifts to scaling production, nurturing talent and building a robust ecosystem that can compete globally.
