London: On Saturday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar—who is visiting the UK—opened India’s new commercial consulate in Manchester. During the event, he interacted with business leaders as well as members of the Indian community. He spoke among audience members’ laughing.
Looking forward to a significant increase in India-UK relations, Jaishankar underlined that the new consulate should be seen as a preparation for the future. He said teasingly that someone usually interrupts him with a higher number whenever he quotes figures. Having heard the opinions of the crowd, he chose this time not to show his figures.
Furthermore, underlined by him was the consulate’s forum for closer cooperation between the UK and India, particularly in the next years. Not only in commerce and investment but also as a stimulus to elevate their relationship to greater heights, Jaishankar sees this alliance as a game-changer.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Foreign Office Minister of State for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West saw the inauguration ceremony. Starting in London on Tuesday, the concluding part of Jaishankar’s trip to the UK and Ireland is the new consulates opening in Manchester and Belfast.
