Bhubaneswar: The counselling for the IITs across the country is over and the good news is that all the seats, including those of IIT-Bhubaneswar have been filled up.
This is for the first time in many years that no seats in the IITs have been left vacant.
Admission statistics for IIT Bhubaneswar:
Total allotted seats: 420
Total students admitted: 406
Male: 71
Female: 71
Candidates who have not reported for admission: 14
According to an IIT-Bhubaneswar spokesperson, the 14 candidates are expected to report for admission soon.
Higher Education Secretary R Subrahmanyam told news agency PTI that 13,604 undergraduate seats were up for grabs in 23 IITs this year and all of them have been filled up.
Last year, 118 seats were vacant.
Since 2013 the IITs have reported 274 vacant seats, with IIT BHU at the top..
In 2016 and 2017, two each seat in IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay went vacant.
The then HRD Minister Prakash Javsdekar had attributed the vacant seats to lack of interest among students in some disciplines.
The Ministry had set up a panel in 2017 which had made several recommendations. They included review of seat strength discipline wise based on employment opportunities, availability of infrastructure and scope for the future.
Multiple rounds of counselling and helpline number to help students make choices were also suggested.
