New Delhi: In a major relief to engineering aspirants across the country, the Indian Institutes of Technology have added over 600 new seats for the 2026 academic session. With this expansion, the total number of available seats across all premier institutes has reached 18,826, a notable rise from around 18,160 last year. The significant increase comes just ahead of the upcoming JoSAA counselling, bringing fresh hope for the lakhs of students who appear for the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced every year.
Leading the charge in seat expansion is IIT Jodhpur, which has introduced 140 new seats to accommodate more students. IIT Mandi closely follows this development by adding 120 seats to its academic roster. Several other institutes across the country have also increased their intake capacity based on their respective infrastructural capabilities and student demand.
Beyond the numerical expansion, the institutes have rolled out 18 new academic programmes designed to align with emerging global technologies and industry requirements. The academic focus has noticeably shifted from traditional engineering branches to highly advanced and specialized domains.
Among the notable additions, IIT Kanpur has introduced a dedicated programme in Intelligent Systems. Meanwhile, IIT Mandi has launched a highly specialized course focusing on Quantum Science and Engineering. Similarly, IIT Indore has started modern programmes in Biomedical Engineering and Data Science.
These new courses integrate modern technology and data analytics into the academic curriculum. The core objective is to ensure that students move beyond pure theory and gain practical knowledge that is directly applicable to the rapidly evolving technology sector.
This academic upgrade offers a direct advantage to candidates preparing for admissions this year. The increased intake translates to a higher probability of securing a spot in these coveted institutes.
