Patna: Residents of Muzaffarpur have warmly welcomed the Bihar government’s decision to crack down on vulgar and double-meaning songs in public spaces, with many, especially women, expressing relief and support for the move.

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who also holds the home portfolio, recently directed police across the state to launch a special campaign — particularly ahead of Holi — against those playing obscene songs at public events, functions, or in vehicles like buses, trucks, and auto-rickshaws. Violators face strict action, including FIRs under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.

Locals say the trend of lewd lyrics during festivals like Saraswati Puja and Holi has long disturbed social harmony and made public spaces uncomfortable, especially for women and children.

Sachin Kumar, a local resident, praised the government’s steps as “highly commendable.” He pointed out that such songs are often blared openly during celebrations, which he called “completely wrong”. “This ban is a step in the right direction for the society,” he added.

Anshu Kumari echoed similar sentiments, saying the decision brought her immense happiness. “It creates a better and safer environment, particularly for women,” she noted.

Shweta Soni also extended thanks to Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, stressing that curbing vulgar songs was “much needed”. Residents believe the measure will promote decency during festivals and public gatherings, ultimately improving the social atmosphere.

The public response in Muzaffarpur reflects broader approval for efforts to safeguard dignity and cultural values amid growing concerns over obscenity in everyday life.
