Hockey Heartbreak, Wrestling Wonders: India’s Mixed Day at Paris Olympics

Paris: The 11th day of the Paris Olympics brought a mix of triumphs and heartbreaks for India, with standout performances in javelin and wrestling raising hopes for more medals, while the hockey team faced a tough defeat.

Chopra Charms with Record Throw

Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra topped the qualification round with an impressive throw of 89.34 meters, securing his spot in the final. This throw, his best in any qualification round, not only surpassed the direct qualification mark of 84 meters but also marked his best throw of the season. Chopra’s stellar performance has reignited hopes for a gold medal in the finals.

Phogat’s Phenomenal Victory

In wrestling, Vinesh Phogat delivered a sensational performance by defeating world number one Yui Tsusaki in the 50 kg category. Phogat continued her winning streak by advancing through the quarter-finals and semi-finals, ensuring a place in the finals and securing at least a silver medal. This achievement makes her the first Indian wrestler to reach the finals, where she will face Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States.

Heartbreak in Hockey

Despite the highs in javelin and wrestling, the Indian hockey team faced disappointment. Germany edged out India in a thrilling semi-final match, winning 3-2 and dashing India’s hopes of clinching gold after 44 years. The team will now compete against Spain for the bronze medal on August 8.

Mixed Fortunes in Table Tennis and Athletics

India’s women shone in table tennis, with Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula advancing to the quarterfinals in the doubles event. However, the men’s doubles team was not as fortunate, facing defeat in their match.

In athletics, Kiran Pahal did not advance to the final of the women’s 400m repechage round. Similarly, sailors Nethra Kumanan and Vishnu Saravanan were eliminated from their events.

Jena Falls Short in Javelin

Javelin thrower Kishore Jena, despite a commendable throw of 80.73 meters, finished 9th in his group and did not qualify for the final, as he could not make it to the top-12 across both groups.

Day 11 of the Paris Olympics was a roller-coaster of emotions for Indian fans, with moments of jubilation tempered by tough losses. As the games progress, the nation continues to rally behind its athletes, hopeful for more podium finishes.
