Himachal Pradesh Raises Legal Marriage Age for Women to 21

Shimla: In a landmark move, the Himachal Pradesh Assembly has unanimously passed the ‘Himachal Pradesh Prohibition of Child Marriage Bill-2024’, which raises the legal marriage age for women from 18 to 21 years. The bill, introduced during the monsoon session, received approval without discussion and will now be sent to the Governor for final assent.

Health, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dhani Ram Shandil tabled the Prohibition of Child Marriage (Himachal Pradesh Amendment) Bill, 2024. This legislative change marks a significant shift in the state’s approach to child marriage, aligning with efforts to empower women and enhance their opportunities. The state cabinet had approved the revised draft of the bill seven months ago, and it was officially passed in the Assembly on Tuesday.

During the session, Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu emphasised the government’s commitment to enforcing the law and curbing crime in the state. “Our government has taken strict action against those who violate the law. There is no place for crime in Himachal Pradesh,” he stated. Sukhu also criticised the opposition for avoiding meaningful discussions, accusing them of lacking a clear agenda.

In addition to discussing the bill, the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s swift response to the recent natural disasters that struck Himachal Pradesh. Sukhu praised the state’s efforts to provide relief and basic amenities to the affected populations, noting the lack of support from the central government during these challenging times.

Sukhu expressed his gratitude towards the state’s officers, employees, youth, and even children, who he said came together in a show of unity and dedication during the crisis. “This feeling of unity and dedication makes us even stronger,” the Chief Minister remarked, underscoring the resilience and solidarity of the people of Himachal Pradesh.

The passage of the Himachal Pradesh Prohibition of Child Marriage Bill-2024 represents a significant step forward in the state’s efforts to protect the rights of women and promote gender equality.
