Mumbai: In a tragic reminder of the intense pressure faced by students preparing for competitive exams, a 19-year-old medical aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
The deceased, identified as Suraj Subhash Shinde, was a resident of Khandala village in Vaijapur taluka. According to local authorities and family members, Suraj was dedicating most of his time to preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). Earning a medical seat and becoming a doctor was his life’s biggest goal.
The teenager was reportedly studying in an upper room of his house on the day of the incident. When he did not emerge after a prolonged period, he was later found dead inside the room. Preliminary police investigations suggest that extreme stress regarding his studies and future prospects drove him to take the extreme step, though a final confirmation awaits the conclusion of the probe.
What has deeply shaken the local community and his grieving family is a brief, two-line suicide note left behind by the teenager. In the emotional note, Suraj apologized to his parents. “I will definitely become a doctor for you in my next life,” he wrote, urging his parents to stay happy and take care of themselves.
The tragedy unfolds against the backdrop of recent national controversies surrounding the NEET-UG examination. Allegations of paper leaks and administrative failures by the National Testing Agency (NTA) recently prompted the Supreme Court to intervene, demanding structural overhauls to ensure transparency. In response, the Education Ministry formed a committee headed by K. Radhakrishnan, and a high-powered task force led by Nandan Nilekani was constituted to recommend exam reforms, while the CBI continues its probe into the irregularities.
The immense burden of expectations, coupled with intense competition, frequently exacts a heavy toll on the mental well-being of young students. Mental health advocates continue to stress that exam results do not dictate the entirety of a student’s life.
