New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have suffered a significant setback ahead of the IPL 2026 season, with star pacer Harshit Rana ruled out of the entire tournament due to a lingering knee injury.

The 24-year-old Delhi cricketer, retained by the franchise for ₹4 crore, will miss the action despite the financial security provided by a BCCI policy.

Rana sustained the injury to his knee while bowling in a warm-up match for India against South Africa in Navi Mumbai ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. The setback forced him out of the global event — where India triumphed — and required surgical repair of the lateral meniscus. Although the procedure was successful, recovery has taken longer than anticipated, ruling him out of IPL 2026, which begins later this month.

Under BCCI rules in place since 2011 for centrally contracted players, Rana will still receive his full ₹4 crore salary for the season, even though he won’t play a single match. Similar benefits have previously aided players like Rishabh Pant and Deepak Chahar during injury-enforced absences.

The absence is a major blow to KKR’s pace attack. Rana has been a key contributor, featuring in 34 matches for the side and claiming 40 wickets, including a strong showing in recent seasons where he emerged as a leading wicket-taker.

KKR recently named Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman, but a direct substitute for Rana has yet to be finalised. The franchise now faces the challenge of filling the gap with options like Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, or others in the squad.

This injury continues a tough run for KKR’s bowling unit, testing their depth as they aim to defend past glories.
