Mumbai: The Indian cricket fraternity is abuzz with anticipation as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gears up for its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28, where elections for key positions — president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer — will shape the board’s future.

Two cricketing giants, former spinner Harbhajan Singh and former captain Sourav Ganguly, are set to dominate the spotlight, with speculation rife about a potential showdown for the prestigious presidency.

Harbhajan, representing the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), steps into the AGM as a first-time delegate. The Rajya Sabha MP and Aam Aadmi Party leader, who previously served as PCA’s advisor, brings his storied legacy — 103 Test matches, 417 wickets, and World Cup triumphs in 2007 and 2011 — to the administrative arena.

Meanwhile, Ganguly, nominated by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), is no stranger to the BCCI’s top echelon, having served as president from 2019 to 2022. His leadership transformed Indian cricket, making him a formidable contender.

The AGM’s agenda extends beyond the top posts, with elections slated for one Apex Council representative and two IPL Governing Council members. Sources indicate that the BCCI approached several former cricketers for administrative roles, but only Harbhajan and Ganguly emerged as prominent candidates, as others showed little interest.

The nomination window, open from September 20 to 21, allows candidates to withdraw by September 23, with elections set for September 28. Historically, BCCI elections have avoided voting, relying on consensus, and insiders suggest this trend may continue.

Adding intrigue, the Karnataka State Cricket Association named Raghuram Bhat, and the Mumbai Cricket Association chose Sanjay Naik as their representatives, potentially influencing the power dynamics. Ganguly’s return, following Roger Binny’s uncontested presidency in 2022, has sparked debates about whether state associations will rally behind a former player to lead again. Harbhajan’s political clout and Ganguly’s administrative experience make this a high-stakes contest, with the outcome poised to steer Indian cricket’s future.

As the BCCI navigates this pivotal moment, the clash of titans promises to captivate fans and stakeholders alike, blending cricketing legacy with administrative ambition.
