NewDelhi: In a concerning incident, the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express collided with a stationary freight train on Friday night, October 11, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This accident has drawn sharp criticism from political leaders, with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi strongly condemning the government’s handling of railway safety. On Saturday, October 12, Gandhi took to social media, comparing the crash to the Balasore train tragedy and expressing his frustration over the government’s inaction.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi stated, “The Mysuru-Darbhanga train accident is eerily similar to the Balasore disaster—once again, a passenger train collided with a stationary freight train. Despite the loss of countless lives in multiple accidents, no lessons have been learned. Accountability must start at the top. How many more families need to suffer before this government wakes up?”
The Congress leader’s remarks follow an accident that saw at least 12 carriages derail near Kavarapettai, Tamil Nadu. Though there were no reported fatalities, nine people sustained injuries. The railway authorities have since ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
Priyanka Gandhi Targets Government Over Repeated Rail Accidents
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took aim at the government, accusing it of neglecting railway safety. She echoed Rahul Gandhi’s concerns, criticising the lack of accountability and action in the face of repeated train accidents.
In a post on her WhatsApp channel, she stated, “Railway accidents have become so frequent that despite one after another occurring, there is neither accountability nor any action from the government. Millions of ordinary citizens are forced to travel in trains under fear and chaos, as the government has turned its back on ensuring safe railway travel.”
She further questioned, “When will this series of accidents, like the recent Mysuru-Darbhanga collision, end? When will accountability be fixed?”
While the government has initiated a probe, the opposition’s outcry highlights the rising concerns over the safety of India’s railways.
