Government Directs Insurance Companies to Aid Kerala Landslide Victims

New Delhi: In response to the devastating landslide and heavy rains in Kerala, the Indian government has instructed public sector insurance companies to expedite relief efforts for the victims. The central government has issued directives to Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), United India Insurance, New India Assurance, National Insurance, and Oriental Insurance to provide all possible assistance to those affected.

These insurance companies have initiated contact with policyholders through local newspapers, social media, company websites, and SMS. Dedicated mobile numbers are being provided for the affected individuals to reach out for support. The worst-hit areas include Wayanad, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Thrissur, from where the majority of claims are expected to arise. The insurance companies are prioritizing rapid claim settlements to deliver much-needed relief promptly.

Special emphasis has been placed on LIC to expedite claim disbursements under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana. To facilitate quick settlements, companies have been instructed to minimize the documentation required. The General Insurance Council will play a pivotal role in coordinating claim settlements and payments among the companies. Additionally, a dedicated portal will be established for tracking the status of claims from all insurance firms on a daily basis.

The Central Government and the Finance Ministry are working closely to ensure comprehensive support for the disaster victims. The Kerala landslide disaster has claimed over 350 lives, and rescue operations are ongoing. The Indian Army, Kerala Police, and Emergency Services are conducting coordinated efforts to locate missing persons. In a show of solidarity, private sector companies have also extended assistance, while the Kerala government has requested modern search equipment from the central authorities to aid in rescue efforts.

As the state grapples with the aftermath of this calamity, the government’s swift actions aim to alleviate the suffering of the affected families and provide them with timely financial support through insurance claims.
