Chennai: The Chennai Air Customs on Monday seized gold worth Rs 14.12 lakh from a smuggler who had concealed it in various personal care items including nail cutters and face creams.
The Commission of Customs, Chennai International Airport, stated that the accused named Syed Nadeem Ur Rehman had arrived here on an Indigo flight.
As Rehman, a resident of Chennai, was hurrying through the green channel, he was stopped at the exit on suspicion of carrying gold, IANS reported.
As Rehman tried to evade questions of the airport authorities, his check-in bag was searched. Airport authorities found 5 Tiger balm bottles, 6 boxes of Nivea cream, 3 mini toy race cars and two nail cutters, well concealed among his other personal belongings.
Reportedly, 11 pieces of gold were hidden in the balm and cream bottles, and 3 gold pieces were concealed at the bottom of toy cars.
On close examination of the nail cutters, it was found that they were multifunctional, with a bottle opener and small knife attachments and 4 of them were made of gold.
