New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel declared Ghol fish the state fish of Gujarat during a two-day Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 in Ahmedabad, attended by several dignitaries.
One of the largest fish in India, Ghol is found in the marine areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra and is of golden-brown colour.
The fish is valuable and is in demand because of its meat and air bladder. Ghol fish is used to make beer and wine and its air bladder is used in pharmaceuticals.
The meat and air bladder of the Ghol fish are sold separately, with the air bladder being exported from Mumbai.
The length of the Ghol fish is around one-and-a-half meters. The longer the Ghol, the higher its price.
The price of the Ghol fish per unit length can go up to Rs 5 lakh.
The fishermen who are able to catch Ghol fish can earn millions annually.
During the two-day Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 in Ahmedabad, Central Minister Parsottam Rupala said that some time ago, the governments of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh also declared their respective state fish through a program organised by the Fisheries Department, India Today reported.
