Gaikwad Set For Australia Tour As Third Opener: Reports Indicate A Potential Call-Up

Bengaluru: Following his exclusion from the Test and T20 series against Bangladesh, there is growing speculation that Ruturaj Gaikwad may soon earn a spot in Team India for the upcoming Australia tour. According to reports, Gaikwad could be selected as the third opener in the squad, a position crucial for India’s five-match Test series scheduled for December.

Currently captaining the Rest of India team in the Irani Trophy, Gaikwad’s name is being strongly considered for the Australia tour. While regular openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma are likely to maintain their places in the playing XI, Gaikwad could be called upon if injuries or form issues arise. His technical prowess, particularly against short-pitched deliveries, makes him a strong contender for the tour, and his recent run of form has added to his appeal.

The Times of India reported that the Indian management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma, believe that Gaikwad’s solid technique and adaptability make him an ideal candidate for the Australian conditions. Should an opportunity arise, Gaikwad will be ready to step up in the demanding role of opener.

Before the Test series against Australia, India is set to face New Zealand in a three-match Test series. However, it remains unclear if Gaikwad will feature in that squad. Another possibility being discussed is that Gaikwad could join the India A team on their Australia tour, which begins later this month. India A is scheduled to play two unofficial Test matches against Australia, with the first beginning on 31 October and the second on 7 November. Gaikwad could potentially be given the captaincy of India A, allowing him to showcase his leadership skills on foreign soil.

Whether selected for the senior Test squad or given the responsibility of leading India A, Gaikwad’s inclusion in either team will be closely watched as India gears up for an important period in their Test calendar.
