New Delhi: In a bold vision to revolutionise India’s public transport, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled plans for ultra-luxurious electric buses that promise an experience akin to flying in an aeroplane, complete with onboard hostesses and premium amenities.
Speaking at the Business Standard Infrastructure Summit, Gadkari emphasised the government’s push to elevate public transportation to new heights of comfort and efficiency. “We are working on introducing ultra-modern electric buses where passengers can enjoy coffee, tea, fruits, and cold drinks during their journey,” he said.
Drawing a parallel to air travel, the minister revealed that these buses will feature ‘bus hostesses’ to attend to travellers’ needs, mirroring the role of air hostesses on flights.
The initiative is being developed in collaboration with Tata, aiming to make road travel not just affordable but also memorable. Notably, the fare for these electric buses is expected to be around 30 per cent of that charged by conventional diesel buses, making luxury accessible to a wider audience. This move aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable and passenger-friendly transport solutions across the country.
Gadkari also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming infrastructure development. He expressed enthusiasm about leveraging AI for constructing tunnels, bridges, and roads, particularly in challenging terrains. “In hilly regions like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, where we face unique obstacles, AI can help us address these issues effectively,” the minister noted. He believes that integrating AI could bring about radical improvements in road infrastructure, keeping pace with global advancements in technology.
This announcement comes amid growing adoption of AI worldwide, and Gadkari’s vision underscores India’s commitment to innovation in transport and construction. As the government accelerates its plans, these developments could significantly enhance connectivity and safety on the nation’s roadways.
