New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced transformative measures for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, promising a vibrant and tech-driven voting process.

In a press conference held in Patna on Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar outlined initiatives to enhance transparency and voter convenience, setting a new benchmark for elections nationwide.

The ECI has capped voter numbers at 1,200 per booth, ensuring smoother operations. A groundbreaking move includes 100% webcasting, allowing live monitoring of all polling stations. Voters will also see colour photos of candidates on VVPAT machines — a first in India — along with clearer serial numbers on EVMs for better identification.

To curb distractions, mobile phones will be collected outside polling booths, and voter lists will feature precise details for clarity.

Kumar praised the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, noting its successful completion by June 24, calling it a national inspiration. Political parties have urged for elections in one or two phases post-Chhath Puja, with the assembly’s term ending on November 22, 2025. While official dates are yet to be confirmed, an announcement is expected soon.

These reforms, rooted in amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, aim to make the process more accessible and transparent. The ECI’s proactive steps, including the new EVM guidelines issued last month, underscore its commitment to modernising India’s electoral system. Bihar’s elections are poised to set a precedent, blending technology with tradition to empower voters.
