Mumbai: In a refreshing tale amid the glitz of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings’ new star, 20-year-old all-rounder Prashant Veer, received life advice rather than cricketing tips from the legendary MS Dhoni upon joining the franchise.

Veer, who shattered records as one of the most expensive uncapped players ever in the IPL 2026 auction, was snapped up by CSK for a whopping ₹14.20 crore. The Uttar Pradesh left-arm spin all-rounder, known for his impressive domestic exploits with both bat and ball, had high hopes of soaking up game knowledge from the former India captain.

However, Dhoni’s first conversation with the youngster veered away from field placements or finishing innings. Instead, the CSK icon prioritised financial prudence.

Prashant Veer shared the anecdote during a recent event at Guru Nanak College in Chennai. He said, “Right now, we haven’t spoken much about cricket.” He told me to save my money and not spend it unnecessarily.”

The young recruit added that Dhoni advised him not to waste money, a piece of pragmatic wisdom aimed at keeping the 20-year-old grounded amid sudden wealth and fame.

This fatherly counsel highlights Dhoni’s renowned maturity and focus on long-term well-being, especially for young talents who can easily get distracted by the IPL’s substantial paydays. Veer, alongside fellow high-value signing Kartik Sharma (also ₹14.20 crore), is now gearing up for the upcoming season under Dhoni’s guidance, eager to prove his worth on the field.

As CSK builds towards the future, such off-field lessons could prove as valuable as any on-pitch masterclass.
