From Helicopters To Handbags: Election Commission’s Surprise Inspections Continue

Amaravati: The Election Commission of India has never been more alert than it was during the recent Maharashtra assembly elections. After examining Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s helicopter, officials of the Commission have inspected the helicopter and luggage of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Amaravati. At the same time in Raigad, the Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar was also searched for bags.

After Rahul Gandhi had landed at Dhamangaon Railway helipad in Amaravati, he was welcomed by officials from the Election Commission. Without further ado, they went ahead to search his helicopter and his personal belongings in his suitcase. The officials who pocketed the cheques walked away from the land and within a short time Gandhi was moving on to a public meeting. He is likely to begin canvassing for eight members of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in the district.

While addressing a big public meeting in Amaravati Rahul Gandhi gave prime importance to the Indian Constitution stating that it provides people entire independence to lead a dignified life. Self explanatory, he declared; ‘The people of Maharashtra will respond a befitting reply to those who are attacked the Constitution.”

The Congress leader condemned PM Narendra Modi and his government policies calling for increase in unemployment, hardship in the economy. Employment is shrinking because Narendra Modi has decimated employment system. That, billionaires bring products from China and sell them here, killing our industries,” he urged, pointing at demonetisation and implementation of the GST as the major causes of shut factory doors and fallen SMEs.

A Dig at the BJP’s Governance
Gandhi said that BJP was weakening the Constitution in private, especially in Maharashtra, and she listed examples. Speaking about the BJP’s recent assembly shenanigans, he declared, “When Shah and the BJP were scheming to form the government in Maharashtra, were they safeguarding the Constitution?” Everyone knows it was done to pass on the land belonging to Dharavi to their friends.”

In an effort to defend, Gandhi had the time to make a joke by saying: Perhaps, the Prime Minister has the problem of short-term memory loss; the entire media, however, will say: Oh, no, he has a photographic memory, he does not forget anything for 70 years. They will also be quick to ask what he did when he was a child they will say he was fighting crocodiles.

Sharad Pawar’s Bag Under the Scanner
In another case, its leader of NCP Sharad Chand faction had his belongings searched in Raigad. Plans by the Commission in ensuring that free and fair election is conducted have received different reactions from the political and the public influential figures.

With the Election fever getting higher in Maharashtra, the step taken by the Election Commission have beenali in the limelight again. Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar do not let go these occasions to place these pertinent questions, making it a war time attractive session for both the sides. While international delegations examine and complaints fly, citizens look forward to their turn to determine Maharashtra’s political destiny.
