From Drums To Diplomatic Talks: PM Modi Begins Visit To Singapore

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Singapore today, 4th September, to a warm and enthusiastic reception as he embarked on a two-day visit to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Singapore. During this visit, PM Modi is set to meet Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and newly elected President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, along with engaging with several prominent industrialists.

The visit to Singapore follows PM Modi’s three-day international tour that began on September 3. Before arriving in Singapore, he made a stop in Brunei, where he held discussions with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on a range of important issues affecting both nations.

PM Modi last visited Singapore in 2018. On his arrival, he posted on his social media platform X, stating, “I have reached Singapore, where we will hold bilateral talks to strengthen India-Singapore relations.”

A Warm Welcome in Singapore

Upon his arrival in Singapore, a warm and lively welcome awaited PM Modi. The Indian community in Singapore, which numbers around 650,000, turned out in large numbers to greet him. The joyous celebration featured traditional Indian drumming, with women adorned in vibrant attire reflecting the culture of Maharashtra. In a heartwarming moment, PM Modi joined in, playing drums with the crowd.

The excitement was palpable as people chanted slogans in his honour and presented him with shawls as a mark of respect. Many in the crowd also tied rakhis on the Prime Minister’s wrist, a gesture reflecting the close cultural and emotional bond shared between the Indian diaspora and their homeland.

Diplomatic Engagements Ahead

During his two-day visit, PM Modi will participate in several key meetings to bolster India-Singapore relations. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, with discussions likely to focus on economic cooperation, trade, and shared interests in the region.

An official welcome ceremony is set to take place at Singapore’s Parliament House on Thursday, 5th September, where PM Modi will meet with Singaporean leaders to further strengthen diplomatic ties.

Engagement with Indian Diaspora

The Prime Minister’s visit to Singapore has also underscored the significance of the Indian diaspora’s role in fostering strong bilateral relations. As he engaged with the community, shaking hands and exchanging greetings, PM Modi emphasised the deep and enduring cultural and economic connections between India and Singapore.

This visit marks yet another chapter in the continued effort to fortify India’s relationships in Southeast Asia, showcasing a blend of diplomacy, cultural celebration, and community engagement.
