Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Admitted To AIIMS Amid Health Concerns

NewDelhi: Manmohan Singh, the previous prime minister, has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi after he was reported to be unwell on Thursday evening. The 92-year-old leader was taken to the emergency ward, where a team of specialist doctors is presently managing his critical condition, which has been reported as serious.

Sources reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI) have yet to determine the exact reason for Singh’s admission. Meanwhile, the reports have emerged that he is suffering from extreme breathlessness and that he has been shifted to the ICU for surveillance.

Active political figures have aired their worries regarding the state of affairs in regards to Singh’s health. Ashok Gehlot, former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and senior Congress leader, chose to express himself through the medium of social media X (formerly Twitter), where he conveyed his worries and wished for Singh to recover soon and be in good health.

Dr. Manmohan Singh was in office as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and is well known for the impactful reforms he made to India’s economy. His regime is noted for the substantial economic reforms that facilitated the liberalisation of the Indian economy and the promotion of private enterprise. Born on September 26, 1932, in what is now Pakistan, Singh’s family moved to India after the partition in 1947. He studied economics at Punjab University and later earned a D.Phil. degree from Oxford University.

Singh’s first political role was in the early 1990s when he was assigned finance minister during the administration of then-Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. His actions during this era were crucial in tackling the deep-seated economic issues of 1991, which subsequently led to reforms that ultimately underpinned India’s present-day economy.

During his term, Singh prioritised social and economic development, with an average GDP growth rate of 8-9% being the result of his policy. Although he faced many allegations of corruption against his cabinet, Singh upheld the image of personal integrity during his entire political career.

The endorsement of his leadership was the enhancement of the United States-India relationship, which included the landmark agreement on civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries. While India is struggling with its economic problems, the society recalls his legacy as a visionary leader in Indian politics.

With the news of his admittance to the hospital, many are hoping for the speedy recovery of Dr. Singh and his return to the state of good health.
