Former Cricketer Gautam Gambhir Joins BJP

New Delhi: Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Friday joined the BJP in the presence of senior party leaders, including union minister Arun Jaitley.

Speculation is rife that he might be fielded from one of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi for the ensuing parliamentary elections.

“I am joining this party (BJP) after getting influenced by PM Narendra Modi’s vision. I am honoured to get the opportunity to join this platform,” he told reporters at the BJP headquarters here.

A resident of Rajendra Nagar in West Delhi, Gambhir made his one-day international debut for India in April 2003 against Bangladesh and went on to play 147 ODIs for the side.

A recipient of Padma Shri, the 37-year-old has been frequently commenting on social and security issues for quite sometime leading to speculation that he was planning to take the politic plunge.

Meanwhile, union minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a meeting with the Delhi BJP unit to finalise candidates for the seven Lok Sabha seats.
