Forget i Phone Envy: Android’s New Charging Tech Will Blow Your Mind

London: And the long-awaited MagSafe-like wireless charging technology is coming to Android users. Samsung and Google are leading the charge in charging their new phones using the new, expanded Qi2 charging standard, which the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced will soon offer Qi2 charging on a wider range of phones.

Qi2, or Qiu Er, the successor of the older Qi standard, promises to charge faster and more efficiently. This technology is similar to Apple’s MagSafe tech, which has been around since 2023, where the magnetic ring lines up with the charger. Samsung says their own Galaxy phones will support Qi2 in the second half of the year, either through a special case or at least one of the Galaxy S25 series will have it.

Meanwhile, Google is working to fine-tune the technology. Google is trying to offer cross-brand compatibility or, at least, allow Android phones to charge off of chargers for other brands with Qi 2.2. It also means that Qi2 technology will be a key feature for Google’s Pixel phones and other Android phones in the future.

But where Apple uses MagSafe well, Android phones are playing catch-up to wireless charging speeds. With the introduction of Qi2, we are resolving to change this landscape. Using a magnetic alignment system will allow Android devices to support faster charging speeds equal to what Apple devices can achieve.

With the adoption of this new standard by the Android ecosystem, users can expect to start seeing a more seamless and efficient wireless charging experience in the months ahead.
