Bhubaneswar: Five persons were killed in three road accidents in the past 24 hours in Odisha, police said on Sunday.
In Cuttack district, two women of Ratapata village near Badamba died on the spot when a vehicle ran them over. The accident happened when the two victims, Rangabati Sahu (55) and Tara Nayak (50), were returning home after taking a bath at Hadua nullah near their village.
Vehicular traffic between Narasinghpur and Athagarh was disrupted after irate locals staged a road blockade to demand compensation for the victims’ families. Later, senior police officers assured the locals to look into the demand and urged them to lift the blockade.
In Angul, one Parsuram Rout died after he was run over by a speeding container near Town police station on NH-55 on Sunday morning. The incident took place when the deceased was going home on his scooty after buying vegetables from the weekly market. Following the incident, irate locals blocked the road by burning tyres.
In another incident in Deogarh district, two persons were killed in a road accident near Kandhala village on NH-49 on Saturday night.
According to police, Ramakanta Rout of Kandhala village was going home around 7 pm when a vehicle hit his bike. As a result, Ramakanta lost control of his bike and rammed into one Kandarpa Sahu of his village. The two were rushed to the district headquarters hospital. While Ramakanta died on way to the hospital, Kandarpa succumbed to his injuries later.
