Five-District Freeze: Internet Services Suspended In Manipur

Imphal: The Manipur government has extended the ban on mobile internet services across five districts of the state until 3 pm on 20 September, citing law and order concerns. The state government issued an order on Sunday, 15 September, confirming the extension of the existing ban for a further five days.

According to the order, Commissioner (Home) of Manipur stated that after a review of the current security situation and its potential link to the suspension of internet services over the past fortnight, it was deemed necessary to continue the restrictions. The ban applies to the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching. Internet services, including mobile data, VSAT, and VPN, will remain suspended in these areas.

Previously, the government had imposed a five-day ban starting from 10 September. However, due to persistent concerns over public safety, the authorities have opted to prolong the suspension.

The decision comes as Manipur faces ongoing tensions in various parts of the state. On 13 September, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Manish Kumar Sachar, visited relief camps in the Kangpokpi district, including Thangkanfai village and Saikul Hilltown. He interacted with members of the Kuki community residing in these camps. According to Sachar, over 100 families are currently living in the relief camp, with the primary desire being a return to normal life.

In a related development, on 12 September, a joint operation by the Indian Army, Manipur Police, CRPF, and Border Security Force (BSF) resulted in the recovery of a large cache of weapons and ammunition in Churachandpur district. Acting on specific intelligence, security forces seized a 7.62 mm AK Series Assault Rifle, magazines, three medium-sized improvised mortars, and other munitions in the Maulsang area.

As the security situation remains sensitive, the continued ban on internet services is seen as a measure to maintain peace and stability in the region. Authorities remain on high alert to prevent any further escalation of unrest.
