New Delhi: Close on the heels of TMC’s Derek Brien’s suspension from Rajya Sabha earlier in the day, five Congress MPs have been suspended from the Lok Sabha for “unruly conduct” as stormy scenes played out in Parliament on Thursday in the wake of the security breach on Wednesday.
The suspended MPs include Dean Kuriakose, Hibi Eden, Jothimani, Ramya Haridas, and TN Prathapan. All five have been suspended for the remainder of the Winter Session, which will conclude on December 22.
O’Brien had demanded a discussion on Wednesday’s security lapse, when two individuals leapt into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery, causing a disruption with the release of yellow smoke from canisters.
The incident has led to heightened scrutiny over parliamentary security measures and prompted calls for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation from opposition members.
Amidst the chaos, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 3 pm as opposition MPs continued their protest over the security breach. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, who moved the motion to suspend the Congress MPs, addressed the House before adjournment and stressed the need for a non-political approach to strengthening security protocols.
