NewDelhi: The last respects paid to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi have heated up the political climate as opposition parties, with Congress in the lead, are directing their critiques at the government for allegedly putting the legendary leader in disgrace. The removers of the last memorial from Raj Ghat, the cremation site for former prime ministers, where they have been resolved to say it looks direct to the other levels, a blatant sign of disrespect.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was among those who expressed these feelings, and he stressed the fact that necks are broken in history that all prime ministers have been buried at their own designated places where citizens are free to visit them. “Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves a memorial at Raj Ghat,” Gandhi stated and beseeched the government to keep the memory of his legacy and the many contributions he made to the nation.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge went a step further and reiterated this request, making a case for an appropriate memorial site for Singh’s stature. He mentioned the last rites of other prominent leaders, shedding light on the importance of the location in the remembrance and the reflection process.
In the middle of the ongoing dialogue, it is essential to know the memorials that are granted for the sites of governmental proceedings for the former leaders. Actually, these memorial places are those that are allocated to the individuals with significant contributions of national and historical importance; thus, unquestionably, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy is the one to have a memorial.
Raj Ghat and other memorials are managed by the Raj Ghat Area Committee along with the Ministry of Culture, which holds them under its aegis. This committee has been entrusted with the assessment of the candidates, the space available, and the current policies validating one’s claims to the site.
The memorial site proposal is a prolonged process that requires all the Ministry of Culture, Urban Development, and Home Affairs to have their say. This whole thing is to reach the right decisions on land selection and its maintenance in the future.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which takes charge of land allocation, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, which steers safety and ceremonial honour during the construction of such memorial sites, are implicated in the process.
The ruling BJP, in the face of the stir, has once more tripled down on their stand to respect Dr. Singh. Through a spokesperson, Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi, the BJP stated that the Cabinet has arrived at a decision to erect a memorial and a preceding resting site for the former prime minister. The word from the minister is that Home Minister Amit Shah has personally talked to Congress President Kharge about the said decision. He further stated that such processes as land acquisition and trust formation are going to be the right processes and will be completed promptly.
Criticism was also unleashed on Congress, with Trivedi stating that the party failed to honour Singh in his time and further to politicise his death, despite the government’s measures in allocating him the respect he rightfully deserved.
The tumultuous dialogues concerning the death rituals of Dr. Manmohan Singh rise to the surface, but general politics like respect, memorials, and political discipline in India are also touched upon. As the talks between the parties iterate, it strikes the mind that while the politics behind honouring may quirk with irregularities, the posterior of this prime minister, who was responsible for the ground laying for the actual economy, is crystal clear. The nation is eyeing close as the solution becomes apparent, and the final tribute to Singh will indeed mirror the respect and honour he earned all through his illustrious career.
