New Delhi: In a major relief to millions of salaried professionals, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced updated guidelines regarding advance withdrawals from Provident Fund (PF) accounts. The revised rules aim to make emergency fund access significantly easier for subscribers needing financial assistance for medical emergencies, education, and marriage.

Taking to its official social media handles, the retirement fund body shared the complete ‘A to Z’ details of the new withdrawal framework. According to the updated provisions, the eligibility criteria have been unified across various categories. The most significant change is the relaxation of the minimum service requirement.

As per the new guidelines, any employee who has completed just 12 months of EPF membership is now eligible to apply for an advance. Subscribers can withdraw up to 75 per cent of their total accumulated PF balance. This 75 per cent limit is calculated based on the total corpus, which includes both the employee’s contribution and the employer’s contribution, along with the interest earned on the accumulated amount.

To cater to varying personal needs, the EPFO has clearly defined the limits on how many times a subscriber can process an advance claim:

  • Medical Emergencies: Prioritising the health and well-being of its members, the EPFO has completely removed the cap on medical withdrawals. Employees can now withdraw PF advances as many times as needed for their own medical treatment or the treatment of family members.

  • Higher Education: Recognising the rising costs of education, the retirement body now allows members to withdraw funds up to 10 times during their entire membership period to fund educational requirements.

  • Marriage Expenses: For individuals looking to fund their own wedding or a family member’s marriage, the EPFO permits advance withdrawals up to a maximum of 5 times.

By streamlining the withdrawal process and reducing the complexities associated with emergency claims, the EPFO aims to provide a reliable financial safety net for its subscribers. Officials noted that these modifications will ensure that employees do not have to resort to high-interest loans during personal crises, allowing them to leverage their hard-earned savings while still retaining a portion of their corpus for post-retirement financial security.
