Bengaluru: eVidyaloka, a leading non-profit organisation committed to transforming the educational landscape in rural India, is on a mission to provide quality education to 200,000 rural students this year. The NGO, which was founded in 2011 by former Microsoft India colleagues Satish and Venkat, is now inviting volunteers from around the world to join its cause.
Leveraging technology and the power of volunteerism, eVidyaloka has revolutionised education in rural areas. With over 6,000 volunteers from more than 40 countries, including the USA, Europe, and Dubai, the organisation enables remote teaching, ensuring that even the most underserved students have access to quality education.
Through its flagship initiative, the Digital Classroom, volunteer teachers connect directly with students in rural areas, delivering lessons in over eight languages. This programme has made a significant impact across 14 states and 67 districts, including 25 aspirational districts identified for development.
In addition to the Digital Classroom, eVidyaloka’s Teach through Television (TTT) programme broadcasts educational content in local languages via cable channels, reaching over 3 crore viewers in 10 states and 256 districts. These innovative models are designed to be scalable and sustainable, aiming to create lasting change in rural communities.
eVidyaloka’s primary mission is to build a knowledgeable and empowered India by focusing on children aged 10 to 15 years, covering grades 5 to 10. The organisation’s unique programmes provide enriching learning experiences in native languages, and to date, have positively impacted over 1.89 lakh students, delivering more than 2.9 million hours of child learning.
Brinda Poornapragna, CEO of eVidyaloka, emphasised the critical role of volunteers in the organisation’s success. “Volunteerism is at the heart of eVidyaloka’s achievements. Our dedicated volunteers from 40+ countries contribute their time and expertise to bridge the educational divide and empower the next generation. Whether from the comfort of home or office, every effort makes a meaningful impact. We invite individuals passionate about education and community development to join our mission. Together, we can ensure that rural students access quality education, fostering opportunities for a brighter future,” she said.
The process of becoming a volunteer is designed to be seamless, with an interactive virtual interface, teaching resources, and classroom support from dedicated assistants. Volunteers can teach from anywhere, at any time, committing as little as two hours a week for a minimum of four months. This flexible approach allows even the busiest individuals to make a significant difference in the lives of rural students.
eVidyaloka also collaborates with leading corporates, including Microsoft, Cognizant, Brillio, KPMG, CGI, LTI Mindtree, Infosys, Accenture, Atlassian, Intel, HSBC, and EYGDS. Employees from these organisations actively participate in teaching and supporting the education of children.
Expanding its impact further, eVidyaloka is pioneering courses in digital literacy and artificial intelligence (AI) through its EmpowerED and BRAIN Programmes. These initiatives equip rural learners with future-ready skills, helping bridge the digital divide and prepare them for the challenges of tomorrow.
