Aiken, South Carolina: An emergency was declared in South Carolina on Tuesday following a fire at a major nuclear facility’s laboratory. The blaze, which erupted at the Savannah River National Laboratory within the Savannah River Site (SRS) complex near the city of Aiken, triggered an immediate crisis response before being successfully extinguished after roughly two hours.
The fire reportedly broke out at 5:39 PM local time, prompting officials to swiftly initiate emergency protocols.
“There is no information regarding the spread of radioactive material outside the affected building,” officials stated, aiming to allay concerns of a broader environmental or public health hazard.
As a strict precautionary measure, all entry points to the nuclear centre were sealed off, and incoming civilian and commercial vehicles were halted. Authorities also moved quickly to restrict rail, river, and air traffic in the immediate vicinity of the laboratory. Employees working in the affected areas, who were not directly involved in firefighting or securing the facility, were directed to shelter in place to ensure their safety.
Senior officials at the centre are currently monitoring the situation and overseeing the ongoing containment operations. State and local administrative agencies have been fully briefed about the incident. Local residents have been officially advised to rely on radio and television news bulletins for the latest safety updates.
The Savannah River Site has played a pivotal role in the United States’ nuclear weapons programme for over 75 years. According to the US Department of Energy, the facility is primarily responsible for handling nuclear materials and radioactive waste, alongside vital environmental cleanup operations to protect the surrounding ecology.
Furthermore, according to the nuclear centre’s official website, ensuring the safety of employees, the general public, and the environment remains its top priority while supporting the country’s national security missions.
Constructed in the 1950s, the expansive centre originally housed five nuclear reactors. These reactors were historically used to produce materials essential for nuclear weaponry, most notably tritium and plutonium-239. The complex also features two chemical separation plants and numerous supporting infrastructure units, making it a critical, long-standing asset in the American military’s strategic defence framework.
