New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that elections to fill 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats will be held on September 3. The announcement came on Wednesday, detailing the electoral process following the vacancies created by various members transitioning to the Lok Sabha or resigning.
Ten of these Rajya Sabha seats became vacant after sitting members, including Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Misa Bharti, were elected to the Lok Sabha. Additionally, two seats were vacated following the resignations of Dr. K Keshava Rao and Mamata Mohanta.
The ECI will issue the notification for these elections on August 14, and the last date for filing nominations is set for August 21. According to the ECI’s schedule, separate elections for each Rajya Sabha seat will occur on September 3, with the results to be declared on the same day.
The timeline for the withdrawal of nominations differs by state. In Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tripura, the last date for withdrawal is August 26. Meanwhile, in Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Odisha, the deadline is August 27.
The distribution of the 12 vacant seats is as follows: Assam, Bihar, and Maharashtra each have two seats; Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tripura, Telangana, and Odisha each have one seat. According to current political equations, it is expected that the BJP and its allies (NDA) will secure 11 of these 12 seats, with the Congress likely to secure one seat from Telangana.
Among the notable members who transitioned to the Lok Sabha, leading to these vacancies, are Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam; Misa Bharti and Vivek Thakur from Bihar; Deepender Singh Hooda from Haryana; Jyotiraditya Scindia from Madhya Pradesh; Udayan Raje Bhosale and Piyush Goyal from Maharashtra; KC Venugopal from Rajasthan; and Biplab Kumar Deb from Tripura. K Keshava Rao from Telangana and Mamata Mohanta from Odisha resigned, contributing to the current vacancies.
Mamata Mohanta recently severed ties with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and resigned from its primary membership, while K Keshava Rao left the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to join the Congress. These shifts have significantly impacted the political landscape, prompting the upcoming elections.
As the dates approach, political parties are gearing up for what promises to be a critical election, with significant implications for the composition and dynamics of the Rajya Sabha.
