St. Petersburg, Russia: India’s National Security Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg ahead of the BRICS National Security Advisors’ Summit, which is set to take place in Kazan, Russia, from 22 to 24 October. The meeting occurred amidst heightened expectations from both Russia and Ukraine, who have voiced confidence in India’s potential role in mediating the ongoing conflict.
During the discussions, President Putin extended an invitation for further talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be attending the BRICS Summit in Kazan. Putin’s invitation signals a continuation of the dialogue on key issues, including the situation in Ukraine, where India has been recognised as a possible mediator.
Doval Shares Modi’s Ukraine Visit Insights
NSA Ajit Doval briefed President Putin on Prime Minister Modi’s recent engagements concerning the Ukraine conflict, including Modi’s discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Doval conveyed gratitude on behalf of Prime Minister Modi, noting that the PM’s recent visit to Moscow was deemed very successful and that he retains “very positive memories” of his time there.
President Putin, in turn, welcomed Doval warmly and reiterated his personal regard for Prime Minister Modi, whom he described as a “good friend.” Reflecting on Modi’s previous visit to Moscow, Putin remarked, “The visit was not only successful, but the work done as a result is very significant.” He also praised the progress India has made under Modi’s leadership, especially in terms of economic development and national strength.
Focus on Security and Strategic Cooperation
In the meeting, President Putin highlighted the importance of security cooperation between India and Russia, reaffirming that security remains a top priority for both nations. He recalled his recent meeting with Prime Minister Modi in July, which underscored the shared vision and objectives between the two countries.
Putin also emphasised his anticipation of the upcoming BRICS Summit and expressed a keen interest in holding a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi in Kazan. The proposed meeting is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing key geopolitical challenges, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
