Delhi’s Former CM Kejriwal Begins Quest For New Home After Resignation

NewDelhi: In a significant political shift, Atishi, a prominent member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of the National Capital Territory of Delhi following the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal. The transition marks a pivotal moment for the AAP as it navigates leadership changes ahead of upcoming assembly elections.

Arvind Kejriwal stepped down from his position as Chief Minister on 17 September 2024, citing personal reasons and a desire to restore public trust. In his resignation speech, Kejriwal addressed allegations questioning his honesty, stating, “I will not sit on the CM’s chair until the people of Delhi elect me again and give me a certificate of honesty.” He emphasized the importance of voters believing in his integrity when casting their ballots in the assembly elections.

Following Kejriwal’s resignation, the search for his accommodation in Delhi has intensified. The former Chief Minister had requested the central government to provide him with a residence, a plea that has yet to receive a response. In the interim, numerous AAP MLAs, corporators, party workers, and supportive citizens from diverse socio-economic and political backgrounds have offered housing options. However, most of these proposals are located outside the New Delhi area, whereas Kejriwal prefers to remain close to his constituency to maintain a strong connection with his supporters.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh announced on 18 September that Kejriwal is expected to vacate the government-provided CM residence within a few weeks. Despite having access to various facilities during his tenure, Kejriwal has committed to relinquishing all government-provided amenities following his resignation.

The AAP community has rallied to support Kejriwal during this transitional period. Offers of accommodation have poured in from party members and ordinary citizens alike, reflecting the widespread respect and solidarity within the party. Although Kejriwal has yet to finalize his new residence, sources indicate that a decision will be made shortly, with a preference for staying within proximity to his constituency in New Delhi.

Atishi’s appointment as Chief Minister is seen as a strategic move by the AAP to ensure continuity and stability within the party’s leadership. Atishi, known for her administrative acumen and grassroots connection, is expected to steer the party through the upcoming electoral challenges while addressing the concerns raised by Kejriwal’s resignation.

As Delhi approaches the assembly elections, the AAP faces the dual task of managing internal leadership changes and maintaining its electoral momentum. Kejriwal’s departure and Atishi’s ascension to the Chief Minister’s office will be closely watched by political analysts and voters alike, as the party seeks to reinforce its commitment to transparency and effective governance.

The coming weeks will be critical in determining how the AAP consolidates its leadership and addresses the accommodation needs of its former leader, all while preparing for the electoral battles that lie ahead.
