New Delhi: Delhi Police has solved the sensational murder case of Delhi University assistant professor Dr. Debosmita Paul with the arrest of a husband and wife from West Bengal. Investigators believe a long running property dispute was the motive behind the killing, bringing a major breakthrough in a case that had shocked the academic community and residents of the national capital.

Dr. Debosmita Paul, an assistant professor at Shivaji College, was found murdered inside her flat in Vasundhara Enclave in East Delhi earlier this week. The incident came to light after her sister alerted the police when repeated attempts to contact her failed. Initial investigations had revealed suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, prompting a large scale probe by Delhi Police.

According to police, the accused couple, residents of Purba Bardhaman district in West Bengal, allegedly travelled nearly 1,400 kilometres to Delhi to execute the crime. Investigators suspect the murder was linked to a property inherited by Dr. Paul from her maternal grandfather in West Bengal. The accused were reportedly tenants at the property and had been involved in a dispute concerning its ownership and control.

Police officials said the couple allegedly visited the professor under the pretext of meeting her and gained access to the residential complex without arousing suspicion. Investigators believe they carried out the murder inside her flat before fleeing the scene. CCTV footage, visitor records, cab movement details and extensive technical surveillance played a crucial role in tracking the suspects.

The breakthrough came after an intensive investigation involving multiple police teams operating across several states. Officers reportedly scrutinised the movements of nearly 200 individuals who had entered the housing complex around the time of the crime. Earlier, investigators had focused on masked visitors captured on CCTV footage and had explored multiple theories, including personal enmity and contract killing.

The murder had triggered widespread outrage among students and colleagues, many of whom remembered Dr. Paul as a dedicated educator and mentor. Her death left the Delhi University community in mourning and intensified demands for swift justice.
