New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has informed Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena that Cabinet Minister Atishi will hoist the national flag on his behalf during the Independence Day celebrations of the Delhi government on August 15. Kejriwal is currently lodged in Tihar jail facing charges of corruption and money laundering in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. Recently, the Delhi High Court rejected his bail plea.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced, “Kejriwal has written a letter to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena from jail saying that Atishi will hoist the tricolor in his place on August 15.”
High Court Ruling and Legal Challenges
On Monday, the Delhi High Court dismissed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the excise policy case. The court found justifiable reasons behind Kejriwal’s arrest and disposed of his bail plea, allowing him to seek further relief from the trial court.
Kejriwal plans to challenge the Delhi High Court’s decision in the Supreme Court. “Kejriwal will approach the Supreme Court against this decision. The Supreme Court has already granted him interim bail in the money laundering case related to the excise policy by the Enforcement Directorate (ED),” an AAP spokesperson said.
Political Reactions
In response to the developments, the BJP has demanded Kejriwal’s resignation, arguing that he has no moral ground to continue as the chief minister. The Supreme Court had previously ordered Kejriwal’s release on interim bail in the money laundering case lodged by the ED on July 12. Despite this, Kejriwal remains in jail due to his arrest by the CBI.
As the Independence Day celebrations approach, the AAP is poised to continue its governance duties, with Atishi stepping in to represent the chief minister at the flag-hoisting ceremony. This decision underscores the party’s efforts to maintain stability amidst ongoing legal challenges.
