New Delhi: As global technology giant Starlink and domestic telecom leader Jio gear up to compete in the Indian satellite internet market, curiosity is growing about how this advanced technology actually works. Unlike traditional broadband connections that rely entirely on underground cables, satellite internet beams connectivity directly from space. Understanding this process reveals a fascinating journey of data travelling thousands of miles in the blink of an eye.
The process begins the moment a user searches for something on their computer. The device sends a data request to the local wireless router. This router is connected through a physical cable to a specialized dish antenna installed outside the house. The outdoor antenna takes this regular data signal, converts it into powerful radio waves, and beams it straight up into the sky.
These radio waves travel directly to a dedicated satellite orbiting high above the surface of the Earth. Once the satellite receives the incoming transmission, it acts as a space relay. It immediately forwards the signal back down to Earth, targeting the best available ground station located within its vast coverage area.
These ground stations serve as the crucial link between space and the traditional internet network. Equipped with massive antennas designed to catch faint radio signals from orbit, the stations are connected to the global internet backbone through extensive fiber optic cables. The ground station receives the space signal, converts it back into internet data, and communicates with massive data centres to find the exact search results requested by the user.
Once the required information is fetched, the entire journey reverses. The ground station beams the search results back to the orbiting satellite. The satellite then transmits the data straight down to the residential antenna of the user. Finally, the home antenna decodes the received signal and passes it to the router through the cable, displaying the search results on the computer screen. Astonishingly, this entire space transit process takes less than a single second to complete.
