Death Penalty For 9 In Spurious Liquor Case In Bihar

Patna: Nine people were sentenced to death and four women were life imprisoned by Additional District and Sessions Judge Luv Kush Kumar of Gopalganj district court in a spurious liquor case here on Friday.

It may be recalled that 19 persons lost lives and six others lost eyesight after consuming poisonous liquor in Khurjbani village on August 16, 2016. The Nitish Kumar government had imposed a liquor ban in the state in April 2016.

FIRs were registered against 14 persons by Gopalganj Police. According to the police charge sheet, the accused have used methyl alcohol in the country made liquor. One person was acquitted in this case.

“The court has convicted 13 persons out of 14. Nine of them have been awarded death penalty while four have been sentenced life imprisonment. I will appeal in the High Court to challenge the judgement of lower court,” Defence lawyer Ved Prakash Tiwari was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.
