NewDelhi: India’s teen maestro, 18-year-old D. Gukesh, triumphed against China’s Ding Liren to clinch the World Chess Champion title in the title match of the FIDE World Chess Championship on Thursday.
The final game of the championship round was 6.5-6.5 before the 14-th game. During this crucial round, Ding, who started with White, set up the match, but the stern faced Gukesh calmly weathered the storm, outplaying the reigning champion to win.
When Ding Liren confessed defeat the educational impact overpowered Gukesh. He could not even look at the men and women who had transformed his small shop into a huge success, and tears of happiness rolled down his face. This was rather surprising seeing that the player had always enjoyed a cool head even during his playing years.
During a post-match press conference which the 16-year-old grandmaster celebrated for the win, a journalist wondered why Gukesh was enraged even though he’s usually calm. Gukesh looked at the signals and thought about the prospects of the match, adding: “This is the dream that all players have at night. I’ve been playing chess since I was six and I have been having this dream to be the world champion for the last ten years or so. Therefore, now, that I came into contact with such intensity, I could not restrain myself.”
It is a historic victory that a new champion has emerged from India which has been evident by Gukesh’s performance. His victory not only shows the talent of the young player but also will also look into the future that chess has in that given nation. With this victory, the chess community has some reasons to rejoice while Gukesh’s inspiring growth from a young dreamer into a world champion will inspire millions of similar-minded aspirants across the globe.
