COVID-19 Update: India Reports 54,735 New Cases Overnight; Tally Crosses 17.5 Lakh

New Delhi: An overnight addition of 54,735 positive cases took India’s COVID-19 tally to 17,50,723 on Sunday. The country recorded a jump of over 1.5 lakh cases in the past three days.

Also, 853 people succumbed to the virus infection in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s death toll to 37,364, the Union Health Ministry informed.

The cumulative recovered cases (11,45,629) have surpassed active cases by 5,77,899. Also, India’s recovery rate remains at 65.44 per cent. The fatality rate of cases though dipped a bit to 2.13 per cent and is observed to be falling progressively, according to a Health Ministry release.

As the surge in COVID-19 cases continues across the country, the R-number in each of these three cities — Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai dip below 1. R-number is an indicator used to indicate the degree at which a disease can be contagious and infectious.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,98,21,831  COVID-19 samples have been tested so far, including 4,63,172 on Saturday.
