New Delhi: A heated debate erupted in the Lok Sabha during the budget discussion when Congress MP and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi made contentious remarks, drawing sharp reactions from the ruling BJP and sparking internal discord within the Congress party.
Channi’s comments centered on the incarceration of an unnamed MP under the National Security Act (NSA), which he described as an “undeclared emergency.” He argued that this situation mirrors an “economic emergency” and restricts elected representatives from speaking on behalf of their constituents. Although Channi did not specify who he was referring to, BJP leaders interpreted his remarks as a defense of Amritpal Singh, a known Khalistani supporter and MP from Khadoor Sahib, Punjab.
The BJP quickly seized on Channi’s comments, accusing the Congress party of aligning with Khalistani sympathizers. Union Minister Giriraj Singh condemned Channi’s statement, calling it “unfortunate” and alleging that it provides support to Khalistanis, who were responsible for the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Singh asserted that such remarks attack the integrity of the nation and called for action against Channi.
The controversy has also caused ripples within the Congress party. Senior Congress MP Jairam Ramesh distanced the party from Channi’s remarks, stating that they were his personal views and not reflective of the party’s stance. It is reported that several Congress MPs, particularly those from Punjab, are unhappy with Channi’s statement. These MPs, constrained by party discipline, have refrained from speaking openly but plan to raise their concerns with the party’s high command.
The issue has highlighted a sensitive fault line within the Congress party, especially in Punjab, where the legacy of the Khalistan movement remains a contentious and painful topic. Many Congress leaders and workers have personal histories intertwined with the violence of that era, making Channi’s comments particularly provocative and divisive.
As the political fallout continues, the Congress party faces the challenge of managing internal dissent while countering the BJP’s narrative of alleged support for separatist elements. The situation underscores the complexities of political discourse in a region still healing from historical wounds and the delicate balance required in addressing issues related to national security and civil liberties.
