Prayagraj: Bollywood actress of ‘Karan Arjun’ and ‘Baazi’ fame Mamta Kulkarni renounced her secular life at the Mahakumbh festival held in Prayagraj.
After receiving the Mahamandaleshwar honour from the Kinnar Akhara, she began calling herself Shri Yamai Mamta Nandgiri through a spiritual name change. Mamta Kulkarni’s spiritual transformation attracted media attention after her past work with big movie stars, but negative headlines about her background keep making a comeback.
Her appointment as Mahamandaleshwar faces scrutiny because of previous criminal cases against her. According to Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan at Kinnar Akhara Kulkarni established contact with them one and a half years ago and performed initiation rituals which allowed her Akhara membership. Narayan stated that her drug case ended without charges because the Bombay High Court ruled there was insufficient evidence.
In April 2016, law enforcement stopped drug contraband in ThaneCapture of vehicles became evidence when police confiscated ₹80 lakh ePHEDrine. Tracing led officials to a Maharashtra factory where Avon Life Sciences Limited manufactures drugs and operates under Vicky Goswami, who controls the plant along with his wife Kulkarni. Kulkarni faced police charges because the directorship of 11 lakh shares at Avon Life Sciences Limited connected her to the drug trafficking operation.
Law enforcement claimed Goswami led the organised crime group operating to produce and acquire ePHEDrine under the regulatory framework of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985. Through additional site inspections, law enforcement officers confiscated 18,000 kg worth ₹2,000 crore ePHEDrine from this manufacturing facility.
The prosecution listed Kulkarni as a main accused because they believed she participated in illegal trade activities through meetings that took place in Tanzania and Dubai. She sought judicial dismissal of her criminal case at the high court in 2018 by declaring her innocence and pointing to insufficient evidence. The Bombay High Court granted a dismissal, ending Kulkarni’s extradition trial currently underway in Kenya, where she lives with her husband.
The Bombay High Court terminated Kulkarni’s criminal case because the evidence proving her guilt was inadequate. After 25 years away from home, Kulkarni came back to Mumbai in December 2024 and posted an emotional message on Instagram. Bollywood insiders speculated about her career return until she stunned the public by renouncing her past at the Mahakumbh festival.
