Jaipur: A fresh controversy has erupted in Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Free Drug Scheme as a batch of lactulose solution, a stomach-cleansing syrup, was found contaminated at Jaipur’s government-run Jaipuria Hospital.

The discovery of a membrane-like substance in the syrup bottles prompted the immediate suspension of its supply, raising concerns about the quality of medicines provided under the state’s flagship healthcare initiative.

The issue came to light during a routine inspection of a new batch of lactulose solution, supplied by Unicure India Limited. Hospital staff noticed an unusual film-like layer in the syrup, leading to swift action.

The hospital administration halted distribution and barred the syrup’s use for patients. Samples have been sent to the State Drug Testing Laboratory for analysis, with a two-member committee, comprising Dr Vinod Gupta and Dr Rajendra Verma, tasked to investigate the contamination’s source.

While no adverse health effects have been reported among patients, the incident has intensified scrutiny on the free drug scheme, already under fire following recent reports of children falling ill or dying after consuming contaminated cough syrup. The recurring quality issues have sparked fear and distrust among the public, undermining the scheme’s aim to provide affordable healthcare to the needy.

Unicure India Limited has been asked to explain the lapse, with strict action promised if negligence is found. As investigations continue, the supply of the affected batch remains on hold, pending the lab report. This latest scandal raises urgent questions about quality control in Rajasthan’s free medicine programme.
