Raipur: The counting of votes is underway in all 90 assembly seats in Chhattisgarh, and initial trends suggest a Congress victory. Out of the 90 seats, Congress is leading with 58, while the BJP is leading with 34.
This marks a significant shift from the 2018 assembly elections, when Congress won 68 seats and the BJP won just 15. The increased support for Congress can be attributed to various factors, including the party’s focus on social welfare schemes and the popularity of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.
Voting in Chhattisgarh took place in two phases, on November 7 and 17. Voter turnout was slightly lower in 2023 (76.31%) compared to 2018 (76.88%). However, female voter turnout increased, with women voting more than men in 50 out of 90 constituencies.
A total of 1,181 candidates contested the elections, and their fates will be decided as counting progresses. The results are expected to be announced later today.
The two main contenders for the Chief Minister’s post are Bhupesh Baghel and Deputy Chief Minister TS Singh Deo. Both have stated that the party high command will make the final decision. However, there have been reports of political tensions between the two leaders.
TS Singh Deo was the state’s health minister before the elections. In 2018, when Congress won a majority, he was initially considered a frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post. However, Bhupesh Baghel ultimately emerged victorious.
In an interview, Bhupesh Baghel said that assembly elections are always fought on the face of the CM and that the high command decides the CM’s candidate.
The final results of the Chhattisgarh assembly elections will be announced later today.
