Congress Demands Answers on Parliament Anniversary Security Breach

New Delhi: A security lapse on Wednesday, coinciding with the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, has raised serious questions about security measures within the Lok Sabha.

During the Zero Hour, two individuals jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery, carrying gas canisters. This incident forced the immediate adjournment of the House until the situation was brought under control.

Following the resumption of proceedings, Speaker Om Birla addressed the incident and revealed the initiation of a detailed inquiry. He also confirmed that the Delhi Police had received necessary instructions and further assured that the situation was under control.

Initial investigations indicate that the canisters only contained smoke and posed no significant threat. The two individuals involved were apprehended and their belongings seized. Additionally, two others were arrested outside Parliament premises.

In response to the incident, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury expressed concerns about the apparent lack of security. He stated, “Today, after paying respects to the martyrs of the Parliament attack, we witness another attack within the House. Does this not highlight a serious flaw in our security system?” He further questioned the actions of security personnel during the incident, contrasting their inaction with the swift response of MPs who apprehended the individuals.

Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, demanded the adjournment of proceedings and the presence of the Home Minister to provide further information. He expressed his disappointment at the incident and questioned the effectiveness of security measures.

Responding to this, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal emphasized the importance of demonstrating national strength and resilience. He urged the House to continue its proceedings, maintaining that disruptions would only send a negative message to the nation. Goyal further accused the Congress of attempting to politicize the issue and undermine the country’s strength.

The security breach has sparked widespread concern and ignited debate about the adequacy of security measures at Parliament. The ongoing investigation and the all-party meeting scheduled for later in the day are expected to shed further light on this incident and potentially lead to improved security protocols in the future.
