Coal Scam Case: Fresh ED Summons Issued To Mamata’s Nephew Abhishek & His Wife

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira have been summoned again by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding a money-laundering case linked to an alleged coal scam in West Bengal.

Abhishek, nephew of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and TMC’s national general secretary, and his wife have been asked to depose before the investigation officer in Delhi next week, ED officials said.

Last week, the Delhi High Court dismissed the couple’s petition challenging the summon asking them to appear before the ED.

Abhishek did appear before the ED in the national capital last September, while the high court exempted Rujira from physical appearance in court.

A case under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002 was lodged by ED based on an FIR filed in November 2020 by CBI alleging a multi-crore coal scam related to the Eastern Coalfields Limited mines in and around Asansol.

ED officials have claimed that Abhishek was a beneficiary of funds obtained from illegal trade. The 34-year-old Parliamentarian, however, has denied the charges.
