New Delhi: Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has commented on the increase in fraud cases during election periods. Speaking at a Constitution Day event organised by the Bar Association, the CJI noted that the courts often become the centre of political litigation as elections draw closer.
“As judges, we feel that often, as arrests come closer, cases of fraud start arising,” the CJI stated. “Courts deal with such cases every day. In some courts, cases of fraud are very high.”
CJI Chandrachud attributed the surge in fraud cases to the prеvailing social climate. He emphasised the importance of coexistence and the Indian Constitution’s emphasis on the collective well-being of its citizens.
“The Indian Constitution emphasises all citizens surviving or prospering together,” he said. “It is crucial to fulfil our duties for the sake of justice and consideration beyond the outcome of an individual case.
The CJI also touched upon the inseparable relationship between freedom and the Constitution, stressing their significance in building a just and equitable society.
