New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud revealed his commitment to a cruelty-free lifestyle, inspired by his daughter, during the inauguration of a Sagar Ratna restaurant outlet in the Delhi High Court premises. This outlet, noteworthy for being run by neuro-diverse individuals, was inaugurated alongside the launch of the Delhi High Court’s Digital Law Report.
CJI Chandrachud shared, “I have two daughters, who are specially-abled. They keep motivating me in whatever I do. I recently became vegan because my daughter said we should live a cruelty-free life.” His heartfelt statement highlighted the influence of his family on his personal choices and his dedication to promoting inclusivity and compassion.
The CJI’s transition to veganism marks a significant step in his commitment to a cruelty-free lifestyle, which extends beyond dietary changes to avoiding leather and silk products. His wife has also adopted these practices, reflecting a family-wide commitment to the cause.
The CJI spoke passionately about his experiences with individuals with disabilities, noting their immense potential. “Every day, I come in contact with people with disabilities. I realize what tremendous potential they have,” he said. He emphasized that initiatives like the neuro-diverse-run Sagar Ratna outlet are part of a broader movement rather than isolated ventures. The success of a similar café in the Supreme Court, which was warmly received by lawyers, underscores this growing inclusivity movement.
For the uninitiated, veganism extends beyond a vegetarian diet by excluding all animal-derived products, including dairy, yogurt, and sometimes honey and eggs. This lifestyle choice aims to reduce cruelty to animals and promote environmental sustainability.
