Chennai: Torrential rains and subsequent flooding have wreaked havoc in southern Tamil Nadu, leaving 800 passengers stranded at Thoothukudi and Srivaikuntam near Tiruchendur. Rescue efforts are underway, with authorities utilizing helicopters to evacuate passengers trapped in the flood-affected area.
The incessant downpour has led to a flood-like situation in the region, disrupting daily life and causing widespread damage. Railway tracks have been submerged, severing connectivity and leaving passengers stranded at railway stations. Helicopters have been deployed to airlift stranded passengers, with food packets being dropped from the air to provide sustenance.
To expedite the rescue operations, Chief Minister MK Stalin convened an online meeting with ministers and district magistrates of the affected districts. Additional pumps and boats have been mobilized from Chennai to pump out floodwaters and facilitate rescue efforts. Schools and educational institutions in four districts have been ordered to remain closed due to the inclement weather.
Despite the rainfall subsiding in some areas, the effects of the flood continue to linger, causing hardship for the affected communities. Relief and rescue operations are ongoing, with NDRF, Air Force, Railways, and local administration collaborating to provide assistance to those in need.
