Imphal: Amid the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, which has been engulfed in unrest for the last 16 months, Manipur Congress President Meghchandra Singh has called for the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister on Friday, 13 September, Singh urged Modi to visit the state, emphasising that his presence could help restore peace and normalcy.
In his appeal, Meghchandra Singh highlighted the dire situation that has persisted in Manipur since 3 May 2023, stating, “The people of Manipur have been eagerly waiting for your presence in the state to voice their helplessness since May 3, 2023.”
Singh further elaborated on the devastating impact the unrest has had on the state, citing the displacement of nearly one lakh residents and the loss of hundreds of lives. He described the current situation as chaotic, with civilians living in fear due to recent aerial bombardments using drones, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and missiles since 1 September 2024.
“For the sake of humanity, PM’s visit will be a great force in restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur,” Singh wrote, expressing the belief that Modi’s intervention could bring much-needed relief to the people.
In response to the deteriorating situation, the state government has imposed curfews in five districts and extended the internet shutdown until 3 pm on 15 September. Chief Minister N Biren Singh recently stated that the internet blackout was necessary to prevent the spread of hate speech and incitement to violence through social media platforms. Authorities fear that some individuals could exploit social media to further inflame the situation.
As the people of Manipur continue to suffer from the ongoing conflict, the Congress leader’s plea to the Prime Minister stands as a beacon of hope for a resolution that may finally bring peace to the troubled region.
